Hydrolates are water condensates, i.e. the by-products of essential oil production by way of steam distillation. This colloidal microparticle system of plant actives (the sol) contains various hydrophilic biologically active substances and a small amount of essential oil, which functions as a preservative for the hydrolates by extending their use-by date up to 2 years.

These plant waters have a more subtle and delicate scent compared to essential oils.

Hydrolates contain as little as 0.01 to 0.1% of essential oils. As a result, they can be used safely and effectively for adult and children aromatherapy.

Unlike the production of aqueous emulsions of essential oils, during the production of hydrolates, the essential oil is distributed in the form of fine particles that form a stable colloidal system, which does not require additional stabilisation using emulsifiers. Recent studies have shown that hydrolates have antibacterial and antifungal effects.

HYDROLATE USE

Water procedures are an integral part to any spa treatment. Due to their acidic pH, hydrolates are excellent for skin hydration, cleansing, rejuvenation, and for maintaining skin’s condition. Hydrolates can be used in the following spa procedures:

• Steam rooms (Turkish baths): 1 litre of hydrolate is diluted in 50 litres of water to scent steam rooms (Turkish baths) (45-55^oC, 70-99% relative humidity), using a specialised vaporiser.
• Hammams: to humidify and scent the room using a vaporiser.
• Whirlpool baths: 200 ml of hydrolate is diluted in 200 l of water 200ml.
• Tubs: 200 ml of hydrolate is diluted in 200 l of water.
• Jacuzzi and pools: 200 ml of hydrolate is diluted in 200 l of water.

Home and office environment:

• To diffuse, refresh, and humidify the ambient air as required using special purpose diffusers.
• Home sprays used as indoor air fresheners.
• To hydrate tissues for skin cleansing (especially convenient when travelling).
• To make cosmetic ice for cooling the areas that have been bruised, burned, or stung by insects.

Hydrolates can be safely used as sanitary products:

• For washing fruit and vegetables (especially convenient when travelling);
• For cleaning cutlery, dishes, equipment, and surfaces in the food industry and hotels;
• For repelling insects at home;
• As ingredients in vaporisers and floor cleaners.

Due to their skin-friendly acidic pH of 3.5-6.5, hydrolates are excellent for use in the production of cosmetics, e.g. for enriching the compositions of creams, lotions, soap, shampoo, and other products.

WARNING:

– Store in a dark place below 17°C.

– Storing at room temperature significantly reduces the shelf life of the hydrolate.

– Hydrolates may become slightly cloudy at ambient temperatures above +10°C.
